You can either design your own t-shirts or use one of the standard designs which are offered by those firms which specialize in t-shirt printing with screen printing in Vancouver.
As there are certain aspects of screen printing which you should understand as they impact on the type of design which you can choose if you want to design your own t-shirt.
A brief description of what is involved in screen printing
The process of screen printing or t-shirt printing in Vancouver:
a. The Screen
As screens used were made from silk at one time this process was known as silk screen printing. The modern fibers now enable us to use synthetic screens which are considerably less expensive as it was a popular printing technique in China.
An explanation of the technique will be necessary so that you can understand the limitations of your design, although the artwork is required before the screens can be made.
With holes large enough to allow the ink to be squeezed through it, a mesh is required and this is what is provided by the screen printing in Vancouver.
With lower for thicker inks and block images and higher for thinner inks and more definition, an average mesh will be 110 inches.
The artwork is placed under it as the mesh is coated with a light-sensitive emulsion. The chemical solidifies and covers the mesh as light is exposed up through the screen and where the light hits the screen.
When the screen has washed the area of the design is clear of emulsion while the rest is solid as the design area stops the light. Whether screen printing t-shirts or any other item this is absolutely true.
b. The Printing
The garment is placed under the box and screen is mounted in a box. Forcing the ink through the mesh, ink is poured into the box and a tool which is known as ‘squeegee’ is pulled across.
Leaving the image on the t-shirt, the ink is then dried. And this is the method which is utilized by the custom printing in Vancouver. As because only one color can be poured in the mesh box or they would be running together as you can imagine.
The process has to be repeated for more colors. It is not possible to merge one shade into another when screen printing-shirts as only delineated areas of individual color can be printed.
Unless the pattern is exactly the same, it should be apparent that a new screen is needed for t-shirt screen printing in Vancouver. Screen printing t-shirts are expensive for individual garments as this adds to the cost.
There is this additional cost for each color and there is a fixed set-up cost too. The cheaper it gets for each individual garment for more t-shirts which are printed in a run.
Without any increase in price, other printing methods such as digital printing can be used. There are a number of reasons behind using screen printing instead of digital.
If you design your own t-shirt with large areas of block colors, screen printing is advantageous. As effectively as a screen, digital printing and other methods cannot print larger areas.
As it can cover any deep colors which are beneath it, screen printing t-shirts are very opaque. To print light shades on top of dark such as pale blue on bright yellow without it looking green digital printing struggles.
For whites and even with DTG jet printers white on dark often last no more than two or three washes as the screen is extremely cost-effective.
